The working concept for the third Stargate television series includes the Stargate's ninth chevron, executive producer Robert C. Cooper told fans today. Cooper appeared on stage in front of 500 fans at Creation's Official Stargate SG-1 / Stargate Atlantis Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"It plays a major factor in the third series," Cooper said in response to a fan's question about the significance of the ninth chevron. "So that question is answered!"

Fans have long wondered why the ninth and final chevron was created by the Ancients, since normal gate addresses only utilize seven of them. The eighth chevron adds an extra distance calculation, allowing the team to establish a stable wormhole to a Stargate in another galaxy. It was first used in SG-1 Season Two's "The Fifth Race."

Cooper also said that the third series "is very active in development. MGM is currently putting financing together. The goal is to have it out in the marketplace in early 2008, which means that we have to start writing very soon. The hold-up has really been the movies -- Brad and I are busy. When we are done with Continuum and Ark of Truth we're going to turn our attention to that pretty seriously."

Whatever form the series takes, viewers can definitely expect the same familiar from that has made the franchise a 10-year-old success. "There will be a Stargate, and a team on adventures," Cooper said. "I can tell you what it won't be, which is it really won't be as much of a spin-off of SG-1 as Atlantis was. And it won't be a spin-off of Atlantis. It's going to be a third arm of the franchise that will really stand alone and I think be an entirely new flavor from what we've done before."

Just what the Stargate's ninth chevron does and how it might relate to working title Stargate Universe (story) fans can only speculate.

8th chevron is a distance calculation (like an area code) to get to a different galaxy with a stargate system.
9th Chevron?

Well the only thing left in known physice would be 1 of two things.
1. Space and Time? Which would open up a time traveling concept. I don't like that idea. I for one am tired of time traveling Sci-Fi episodes.
2. Multi-Verse(Other Dimensions) theory? They would be able to do the same thing that mirror did for Daniel when he traveled to the alternate Earth, but instead with the gate. This would require a massive amount of energy to create though. Probably even more energy then a Supergate and that was powered by a singularity.

I for one think the Stewards of Stargate will think of something different.

I'm wondering if Amanda will be in the 3rd series as she's leaving Atlantis? Anyone hear any rumors?

As far as the 9th chevron, I'm liking the multidemensional aspect, moving between realities, trying to help the good guys in parallel dimensions. Who knows? What I do know it was bad enough having to hear Gary saying "Chevron 1 Encoded" and I certainly don't want to hear someone go all the way up to 9. It'll be like the 12 Days of Chrismas, LOL!

Response to dryden: lol, you got a one of a kind or at least a rare woman. I wouldn't trade mine though just because its funny when I get all ready to watch the new stargate episode and she's all mumbling to herself and all I can do is grin.

To answer PanDe's question, from what i hear about the 3rd series they are going to have a whole new cast, amanda will be in the next 2 straight to dvd stargate SG-1 movies though. Concerning the 9th chevron, i really have no clue so far need to think about it some more. But I hope its not time travel as well. Though the episode with T'elc and Jack O'neill where its like the movie "ground hog day" and they keep reliving the same day was a great one, had so many funny parts to it. Such as t'elc watching jack juggling, the next thing you see is t'elc has learned how to do it, and then they are juggling side by side while daniel jackson is working on figuring out how to stop them from reliving the same day.

I must say that the multi-dimensional theory sounds likely, but I also heard that the third series will revolve around ships, maybe the search for the meaning to the ninth symbol will be the third series?
