Lets Talk Marketing 4 Years, 3 Months ago

The one thing I have noticed as I talk to a lot of friends/acquaintances through ventrillo and teamspeak that are still playing games like star wars galaxies, WoW, Eq2, and Tabula Rasa is this: they don't even know stargate worlds is even being developed or they just don't know anything about it. When I ask the question what MMO are you going to play next I always get the same two answers, Warhammer Online and Age of Conan (this is even coming from the science fiction fans). Thats what got me thinking, is stargate worlds just earlier in development than those two games or is the marketing failing so far for SGW. Age of conan is getting the word out about their new combat system and adult combat graphics. Warhammer is spreading the word about their Realm vs. Realm pvp and siege type warfare. SGW has a lot to offer with their tactical combat and storyline potential based on the movie and tv shows but the word hasn't seemed to get out. One thing I have to give to warhammer online is they have some great marketing on their site, when you listen to their developer podcasts talking about their game, especially Paul, you get this feeling they are really excited about their game. Makes you automatically feel its going to be a good one. When you listen to most producers and developers talk about their game it sounds like Ben Stein from Ferris Bueller's Day Off where he says in the most boring sedated voice ever: "bueller.......bueller.......bueller." The marketing on scifi channel is a good start, but if the buzz on the internet isn't there your going to be in trouble. So back to my original question, is the marketing just real slow to take off on the internet for SGW or is it just too early in the development cycle?

We all know that SGW has been 2 years in the making, but honestly, I did not go to the website till I saw a commercial for it. I was like it's about time. Then went to the website and started to get some info and stuff. I was hoping they were farther along. I am sure CME does not have a open budget and is waiting to do the marketing on it when it is further along. I thought the first trailer could have been better but it is a start. They have been doing more and more interviews with gaming sites. So I am optimistic and believe it is still too early in the development cycle.

And if all you wonderful members found a site to post a backlink to SGWGame.com it would help spread the SGW word...shameless I know
But my guess they will be letting out more teaserso as time gets closer...thinking of how Crytek leaked screen and video way before the launch and there wasn't a shooter fan alive that didn't want a copy of Crysis.

In a recent interview on tentonhammer.com the games producers did say that for now they are working with MGM to host more trailers on SciFriday during Atlantis as well as having more exclusive content on the official website. So keep an eye out!!

IMO, SGW will become THE event, as WoW once was (or still is, nvr liked that game).PPL spray the word around, best way to bring a strong interest, and then they'll come out w/ a huge marketing campaign, which will get the large audience. Then u get the "event" as long as the game is good, which i dont doubt

remember, the game is going to be released in the 4th quarter of 2008. Getting everybody hyped up about the game with marketing will only get them excited leaving them with nothing untill 4th quart. 2008. It would be senseless to waste marketing dollars right now when it's still very far from release day.

SGW.com before Xmas said that January 2008 was going to be the point when they would begin to leak out more info about the game... Let the fans have the info they've been clawing to get their hands on... So perhaps the same is going to be said for the marketing... No point hugely advertising a game which isnt out till Oct 2008 at the earliest, in 2007.. Instead wait till beginning of 2008 like now... with a six month run up to the game release and then flood the information superhigherway with tons of info and adverts, maybe even Sheep with SGW signs stensiled onto the wool... (Well maybe Not, but you have to admitt its a good marketing idea for peoplw who drive through farming country )
Games like World of Warcraft and Warhammer etc, is that they come from established gaming brands, where as this will be the first Stargate Game out on the shelves. The others have established fan bases in the gaming communitity.. Where as SGW is growing one from scratch if you exclude the Stargate Tv show and film fans, which may not all be gaming fans...
I think it is around now that we will be seeing alot more marketing for SGW in the run up to October!!...

I agree it might be a little early for full blown marketing. Thats not really what I mean. The scifi channel marketing you only really have to take so far, if you overdue it and spend too much money on it, all you are doing after awhile is preaching to the choir. More marketing targeted to the internet crowd, use different gaming sites with info about SGW. Other MMO's have started a year or earlier on getting the word out, and it does work. I believe you can never start to early when it comes to marketing online. Its cheap and effective. I understand they don't have much of the game to show yet though. Thing is you can get past that by having some good podcasts added to the stargateworlds main site that just isn't some guy sitting at a desk explaining his job. Just a few enthusiastic/charismatic developers in podcasts talking about their new cover combat system among other things, with a nice backdrop picture of the Stargate or SGC can work wonders.

But that is exactly what they are doing. They did leak combat information and they have given us concept art. It's everywhere, on www.stargateworlds.com and even here. But I do see where your coming from. Your just asking for more. but you don't want to ruin your appetite, for the main course.

Well I'm thinking they are rolling out marketing correctly. Look at the gaming sites, lots of interviews and discussion there. THat's the initial free tactic in getting out info - do interviews, it's free advertising.
Second, there is a huge established fan base. Hence running the teaser during Atlantis. So it looks like theri ploy is to go directly to the fanbase, many of which will play the game.
I think they will start the marketing as soon as the open beta is done. CME seems like one of those private companies that won't be forced to launch a game before it's done. That's the good thing about having investors rather than needing to worry about public sector stock holders. So I'm thinking as soon as it's just about good to go is when the major advertising boost will come.
Anyway, my $0.02.
