It's certainly been an interesting ride for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment (CME) over the last few years. In January of 2006, the company announced that it would be the first to develop a new MMOG based on the popular Stargate franchise with Stargate Worlds. Fans of the series and players rejoiced at the news. But anticipation for the MMOG quickly took a downward spiral in 2008 when reports of the development team going unpaid for large periods of time began to pour in. Shortly thereafter CME found itself in even more trouble as scandals and lawsuits began to stack up.
Players were later given a multiplayer shooter instead of an MMOG with the release of Stargate Resistance, which eventually led to another lawsuit. But it appears that after all of the lawsuits and controversy, the final nail has been driven into the proverbial CME coffin. This weekend marked the final day of operation for Stargate Resistance, which had its licensing rights pulled by MGM in November, finally shut down for the last time over the weekend. With the closure of the game, the Firesky, Stargate Resistance and Stargate Worlds websites have shut down. This weekend the site landing page was replaced with a post titled "Shutting Down" and a message indicating that an announcement would soon follow.
Today the official announcement was posted with the following message:
As we indicated in our previous announcement, as of January 16, 2011, we are unfortunately no longer able to sell or operate Stargate Resistance. We are actively evaluating options for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, Inc. and its products, and will update you as soon as additional information is available. Thank you for your continued support.
