Apparently we will have to do mini games when crafting like pressing Z and X and C keys in a pattern or something.

Oh oh! Maybe pressing Y and Z in a certain combo will work too!!

I find this information to be relevant.. its from the recent IRC chat that had quite a few devs present.

Question: How have you tried to avoid the monotony that has plagued crafting systems in other games?
Answer: <CME_Aruspex> With Science! Seriously, monotony comes from not feeling like your action is new and unusual. Raph Koster talks about the purpose of a game is to learn and figure out a new activity - once you learn it, you get bored. In Crafting 2.0, we hope to introduce a variety of mini-games and ways to complete items to make it much less monotonous - you can use minigame X OR Y OR Z to complete this item, or all three, or none and brute force it.

Question:Will full time trade-skill characters be a viable choice?
Answer:<CME_Aruspex> I plan on playing one!

...there's more, but full transcript can be found on the SGW main news page. I think all of these things are good... especially the fact that the crafting system seems to have the ability to 'upgrade' itself. This is marvelous.

I plan on crafting, though I dont know how much, I am usually torn between adventure/craft in all MMOs that I have played.

Those transcripts really reinsured me about the non-combat part of the game, and i'm really excited. I myself want to play an Archaeologist; but I would also really like to go deep into the crafting side of the game, because I enjoy that kind of thing.
LotRO has a really good crafting system, but I hope SGW can even top that. I have no doubt in the crew at CME, i'm sure they'll give us something awesome!

Thats just my oppinion.

Why do people fish in games? It's an interest and something we can do in game to have fun. I'm a fan if crafting, I enjoy making my own items to wear and hope I can make something better then the average drop.

One big reason for me to craft is that I like to group with my long time friends, they usually can't play as often as I can so I like to make stuff while waiting for the great grouping we do.

I just realized I posted in this topic again, don't think I added much just more crafting enthusiasum.

I hope theres not " level restrictions" on crafted items.
(Some level requirements make sense, but im hoping its nothing like WoW)
{WHAT I NEED ENGINEERING 200 TO USE THIS ITEM, WTF!?} LOL

I had to think about what you meant for a second there. When I saw "no level requirements" I was thinking you meant experience levels. But yes, it seems a bit silly that a completed device would require the skill that built it. The engineering ones sometimes make sense, but my favorite WoW example was that if I unlearned hammer mastery as a smith, I'd somehow forget how to hit things with my fancy hammer.

Now, penalties and bonuses for understanding the gear, sure, that makes some sense. But if my commando gets handed a gun made by a scientist class, shouldn't be capable of using it?

So, I guess what I'm saying in my long winded way is, I agree with you.

Oh yeah my power of English continues to confuse the world!

Yeah thats what i meant, though, it like errrmmm.... (Que stargate example)
Its like when O' Neill made the replicator gun thingy, he didn't know what he made exactly, but when replicators attack he shoots'em up real good.
Therefore O' Neill knew how to use the crafted weapon, but had no idea how he made it. (Or w/e u get the point)

I agree with the both of you. There is no reason that I should have to be able to make something in order to use it. That's not what I am trained to do. I am trained to wield the weapons not make em. I do understand that you should have to specialize in different skills in order to wield different weapons, but crafting them should not be one of them. Mind you I love crafting and think there should be some things that only crafters can use, but not every weapon I make should only be usable by me.

I agree. The "only usable by Engineers" in WoW was very lame. It made being one kinda a waste, unless you were a gnome or something and not interested in making money.
I think maybe faction gain should be the deciding factor in whether you could use X weapon or not (aka human, goa'uld, asgard, jaffa). Makes no sense that a human fresh off the boat from Earth could masterfully wield a Jaffa "joy" stick from the get-go... or most especially a goa'uld device. (though I think that it should be possible for "good" guys to learn to use them, since there ARE Tok'Ra and those "once indwelt" like Sam Carter running about with naquadah in their blood.)
But *nods* I agree... I would be -very- ticked if my archeologist could not use some weapon because she is not a warrior-class. C'mon... thrown books/manuscripts only hit so hard!!! (though... those chunks of stone with hieroglyphs on 'em sure make a nice "THUNK" when ya knock someone over the noggin with 'em!!! > )

((And yes, I am aware that the archeologists are not being 'made' to be wusses, but "very cool" per CME just an example ))

It depends on how far people go with crafting. It should no way be a main point of the game, but having crafting for making buildings and even your own house or dungeon always draws me to games...
